For $8+tax it is hard to go wrong. I switched from QuickTax, which is overpriced bloatware.
Downloading Taxcel was painless, even over dial-up. Taxcel runs on top of MS Excel. I am running Windows 98 OS. The good part is that you can try out the package (with printing or filing disabled) before committing any money.

Problem 1: Switching back and forth between regular Excel spreadsheets and Taxcel is a problem, to the point I had to reboot once. The problem occurs when I close Taxcel, run a regular spreadsheet, and try to run Taxcel again. Clicking on the filename did not seem to work, but starting Taxcel first and then opening the target file worked. Clicking on the target file directly did not work. This also is the case with Excel files. You must start Excel first and then use menu open.

Problem 2: My wife's Netfile was not accepted. The CRA error message is not clear at all, it reports an error with line 50337. I am still hunting why this occurs. My own Netfile worked flawlessly. (Can't find any line 337).

A few things were not as felicitous as they should be. For instance, entering your income in something that looks like a tax slip is a neat idea, but it becomes a bit of a drag when you have to start a new tax slip for each income source. A table with multiple columns for multiple income sources would be better.

And transfers between spouses were not as smooth as I would like.

On the other hand, the program lets me cherry-pick around my wife's and my returns in the order that I get information, rather than following their prompts from the start every time -- better than some programs.

I started with Cantax, was sold to Quicktax when Cantax folded its consumer version, and switched to Taxcel last year. I'll stay with them this year.
