Sales Taxes

Taxation in Canada is shared between the federal government and the various provincial and territorial legislatures. Provincial sales taxes (PST) are levied by the provinces while the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a value-added tax levied by the federal government, sometimes combined with the PST into a Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in the provinces of Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. British Columbia had adopted it but abolished it in 2013 after a province-wide referendum. There are no provincial-like taxes in the three northern territories of Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut.

Sales tax rates for 2017

  • Provincial sales tax generally run from 5 to 10% depending on the province;
  • the GST rate is 5%.
