Health Tax
The health care system in Canada is funded at both provincial and federal levels in order to provide a "free" health care service to Canadians. (Not all health care is of course free.) The financing of health care in Canadian provinces and territories is provided from taxation both from personal and corporate income taxes in addition to other sources like federal and provincial sales tax and provincial lottery proceeds.
Some provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario) also charge health premiums to supplement health funding. In Ontario, the Employer Health Tax (EHT) is a payroll tax paid by business on remuneration paid to employees and former employees. These premiums are, however, not required for health coverage as per the Canada Health Act. Funds are allocated to provinces and territories by the federal government through the Canadian Health and Social Transfer (CHST).
