Inheritance and Estate Tax

Inheritance tax pertains to the transfer of wealth upon the death of an individual and the taxation applied to the bequests that taxpayers receive from the deceased.

You should contact the Canada Revenue Agency as soon as possible with information about a deceased individual as well as complete the necessary information forms. The CRA provides Information Sheet RC4111, What to do following a death that you can send to your tax services office or tax centre.

The type of tax return that you will need to file can be determined by information about the deceased's income sources. The types of returns include a Final return and Optional returns.

For more information regarding Clearance certificates, the Canada child tax benefit (CCTB), universal child care benefit (UCCB), Canada child benefit (CCB), GST/HST credits, Deemed disposition of property, or Net capital losses with respect to the death of an individual, please contact the CRA.
